A guided hiking tour to the quiet Keros of Ylläs

Have you ever taken a hike where you didn’t feel like you climbed high – and yet felt like you had reached somewhere above it all?

The Keros of Ylläs don’t shout for attention with their height. They don’t dominate the landscape – they move with it. And yet, they offer something rare: silence, space, and the feeling that here, now, there’s no rush.

This guided hike to the keros of Ylläs is Sisu Outdoor’s new summer tour. A peaceful, four-hour day hike along quiet trails to the real keros of the area – the kind whose summits aren’t reached by wide paths, but by reindeer tracks, old roots, and quiet fairytale forests.

What makes a kero a kero?

Many are familiar with the dramatic fells of Lapland, but keros are a different story.A kero is a gently rising, often round-topped landform that doesn’t aim for the summit, but the horizon. Shaped by the Ice Age, keros blend into the landscape and remain still – even when everything else around them shifts.

In the Ylläs area, some of the best-known keros include Linkukero, Äkäskero, Koivakero, and Niesakero. Each kero has its own character, its own sense of space, and its own quiet story – and some are known only to local hikers and the reindeer who pass by.

Sisu Outdoor’s new hiking tour leads to one of these keros, depending on weather and trail conditions – always to where the path feels right that day.

A hike without haste – a guided hiking tour to the quiet keros of Ylläs

A guided hiking tour to the quiet keros of Ylläs moves at the pace of the surroundings – not your pulse. The trail follows old reindeer tracks and slowly climbs toward the open tops of the keros. Along the way, we stop not to perform, but to perceive: to take in the views, feel the breeze, and notice the silence. Our guide shares stories about the area's nature, culture, and the history of these quiet hills. We may spot a reindeer – or just its tracks. We might hear a Siberian jay, or simply the wind.

During the break, we enjoy coffee or tea from a thermos and a small bite to eat at the edge of a kero opening. It’s not a place found in a guidebook or marked on a map – but a place that feels just right to pause.
